Thermal Imaging Cameras
Thermal imaging cameras have become life-saving instruments for firefighters. They allow firefighters to visualize people trapped in smoke-filled rooms in which normal visibility is reduced to zero.
Because these instruments are all portable battery-powered devices, they have military applications as well. Span has provided the critically important battery charger component for a number of thermal imaging camera manufacturing companies. The products are not necessarily just charger circuits but instead involve custom-tooled packages with cooperative electronic features as required.
Some of these customers have continued to re-order our thermal imaging cameras in bulk more than five years running. Battery charger models are designed for in-station and in-vehicle use. They give confidence when the effectiveness of design yields solid field reliability numbers, and our dedicated customer service is rewarded by long supplier associations with industry leaders.
Military & Aerospace Applications
In addition to firefighters, Span also serves the military and aerospace areas. A purely aerospace customer is NASA. Span licensed NASA and then supplied a proprietary device that reports charge status of batteries located in space suits and in astronaut back packs. This application, we are pleased to say, is still manufactured today.
Considering more general military applications, Span has supplied mobile computer carts to Boeing for an Army application and very specialized battery chargers to Lockheed Martin for unspecified applications.
In another ongoing government-sponsored program, Span has been selected and is providing specialized battery chargers for a critical safety device. The project is to provide means to measure dust density in mine environments for the benefit of determining the health risk to miners. Again, it's a highly technical, extremely sensitive battery-powered instrument that will likely save lives in this dangerous area. We are pleased to be selected to contribute to such an important project.
