Power Management Systems for Computer Carts
Some computer carts store a number of computers which can be fully active while also charging extra sets of batteries for the same computers. All together current drawn by the cart can easily overload common line power circuits causing circuit breakers to open and frustration for the those waiting for results. The alternatives have been only to remove some of the items from the cart so less current is drawn (unsatisfactory handling and delay) or to employ some time based product which simply switches small groups of units on and off so that only a few are drawing current at any time. This of course requires much longer time to complete the job.
Span has for years included a true power management system in it’s line of computer carts. This very successful product truly measures current drawn by the cart several times a second and when current exceeds a preset limit it automatically turns off portions of the cart in priority sequence until the current returns to within limit. When the total current diminishes because other circuits have finished, the system immediately restores power to each previously shed circuit as long as the limit is not exceeded. As a result, the operator has no procedures to follow, just fully load the cart, turn it on and forget it. The power management system guarantees that all cart functions will be finished in the shortest time possible given only the limits of maximum line current.
Span Inc now makes this power management product available to the general market.
Each unit is a totally enclosed electrical system with power input receptacle and 4 output power receptacles arranged physically the same as the priority sequence that the system will use to shed loads. Just plug a power cord into the input port and plug in separate cables leading to each one of the circuits that will be switched. Plug them into the receptacles related to the intended priority for each circuit. The current limit can be set by the factory or in the field. An LED indicator will display the status of each switch channel.
This member of Span’s Power Management System family will have other applications including battery powered mobile devices, auto-navigating carts, patient monitoring carts, and generally anywhere power required in a location having multiple circuits can temporally exceed supply limits.
