Power Management Systems

Unlike power generators, UPS, and surge suppressers, Span’s Power Management Systems, at times when the source power is seriously limited, will direct available power to the most important places. As source power diminishes, the system intelligently turns off individual circuits of lower priority giving the best chance of maintaining adequate power where its most important.

Span’s Power Management System measures available power (voltage and current) many times a second. It becomes active when that power falls below preset limits.

In a list of local circuits, customer gives each circuit a priority number, for example:

  1. never interrupt highest priority - like sump pump, security circuits, certain kitchen appliances
  2. next lower priorities - certain lights, food freezer, etc.
  3. etc.
  4. lowest priority, like water heater, outside lights, garage lights, etc.

Now, when power becomes limited, the system turns off circuits in order of priority, lowest to highest, so that power can be maintained where it is most important for the longest possible time.

Importantly, Span’s Power Management System, in the case of totally inadequate power, will repeatedly signal backup systems, e.g. a gas powered generator, switches to other sources, etc. to become active, then continue to distribute power from that source in the same fashion.

When the main power source is restored, Span Power Management Systems will also restore power to each circuit according to priority, highest to lowest. This process is on-going and fast even during the low power mode. Available power is always being measured, effects of switching circuits in and out is being recorded so there always is a logical plan to distribute power in the most effective manner.

There is a growing list of Span Power Management Systems designed for various applications from simple units for computer carts that limit current so that line circuits can’t be overloaded, to much more sophisticated systems for homes, boats, RVs, and still more capable Systems suitable for commercial and industrial applications.
